The World Senior Darts reported it folded in August 2025. The short run of events that started in 2022 has come to an end. For darts fans of a certain age, it was a chance to see the stars and World Champions of the past who were all throwing some good arrows.
For the legacy of the tournaments held, and for the past winners of the Seniors World Championships, Matchplay, Masters and Champion of Champions, I will keep the history of these events intact. Let’s hope this isn’t the end of such events, and that a sponsor and broadcaster can see the merit in these events, so that one day they may return.
The World Seniors Darts (WSD), formerly The World Seniors Darts Tour (WSDT), staged its first World Senior Championships event on 3-6 February. The WSDT 2022-2024 criteria were open to players of 50 Years or over. However, since the name change to WSD, the entry age has been reduced to 45 years or older.
2022 at the Circus Tavern Purfleet. The Tournament featured past World Champions from across the globe and from both sports divisions. The sixteen-time World Darts Champion Phil Taylor was coached out of retirement to play in the event with John Lowe MBE, Bob Anderson, Les Wallace, John Part, Martin Adams, and the ten-time ladies darts champion Trina Gulliver MBE.
At 54, Robert Thornton won the first WSD World Championship staged event.
The packed venue, along with BBC iPlayer and BT Sport coverage, was a roaring success, encouraging other stars from the past to sign up to feature WSDT events. TV Broadcasters have varied from the BBC iPlayer to the TNT TV subscription channel. See the WSD website for the latest TV broadcast details.
Players over fifty can also enter the qualifiers, and successful players win a place in the event finals. Hence, we expect more dart stars to enter future events.
Since February 2024, the WSD has adopted a new ranking system and added qualifying events for players to participate in the headline tournament.
