Darts World Rankings: Profiling the World’s Top-Five Players

We look forward to an exciting new darts championship season, as things are set into motion slowly. What makes the sport of dart-throwing so exciting is watching the players, and like in any other individual sport, the sport of darts has its list of top players. We bring you a profile of the players sitting pretty at the top slots in the PDC Order of Merit List.

1. Gerwyn Price

2020 was fabulous for Gerwyn Price, winning him a lot of accolades and prize money. The man from Wales bagged the Belgian Darts Championship, the World Grand Prix, the World Series of Darts Finals, and the World Cup of Darts apart from many floor events. There was no stopping Price as he beat Gary Anderson in the final at the William Hill World Darts Championship to pick his first world title. This victory etched his name in the history of the sport, making him the number one player in the world.

2. Michael van Gerwen

‘Mighty Mike,’ as he’s fondly called, is considered by many as the greatest player to have graced the sport since Phil Taylor. He’s expected not just to reach Taylor’s World Championship count of 16 but surpass it. Being the youngest player to win one of the major tournaments after winning the BDO World Masters in 2006, he hit the headlines soon enough in his career. It was an indication of the bright future that awaited Michael after he got the better of the World Number One, Taylor, in 2007 and also defeated Raymond van Barneveld in a nine-dart finish. Gerwen has bagged as many as 56 televised PDC titles and 80 non-televised ones to seal his domination in the sport and become a household name.

3. Peter Wright

Peter 'Snakebite' Wright is, without a doubt, the PDC's most colourful player. His bold outfits have made him all the more popular among his fans. After his debut, Wright went on to bag eight televised and 26 non-televised PDC titles. Beating Van Gerwen in 2020 to be crowned the world champion marked the pinnacle of his success. He had a fabulous start to the year, winning the Masters the very first time, therefore, winning televised titles on the trot. He also bagged the Players’ Championship and the Summer Series that year.

4. James Wade

James Wade has earned the nickname 'The Machine,' and in him, we have a player who has won a major in three different decades. His consistency is superb, which has kept him at the top of the rankings all along, courtesy of his impressive performances. After climbing through the rankings steadily, Wade has made it to the fourth spot after lifting the UK Open for the third time. It was Wade’s 10th televised title, only the third man to achieve the feat of reaching double figures. He has also won 27 non-televised titles.

5. Rob Cross

Things have been tough for Rob since he won the World Championship in 2018. However, that doesn’t stop him from being a contender for major PDC titles. Till now, Rob has won five PDC events, four of them televised and five non-televised. He did make a steady start in 2020, but early eliminations in televised majors have put the brakes on his progress slightly. He hadn’t made it to any final since the World Series of Darts Final in September 2020, and ‘Voltage,’ as he’s fondly called, will be looking to change that.

As an ardent fan of dart competitions, you hate missing out on any of the action, don’t you? There are occasions when catching up on all the action becomes difficult, like travelling abroad. When you are on the move, your mobile data fails quite often.

On such occasions, you are tempted to use public Wi-Fi despite the risks. It is recommended that you install a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to protect yourself. A VPN works to ensure your security by hiding your IP address so that you can’t be tracked online. An encrypted connection is established between your device and the server, which hides your online identity. Furthermore, a streaming VPN will give you access to more content regardless of your location. Thus, you won’t miss any matches and will be able to watch anything, even when you are away.
