Back To Blackpool: The Five Things You Should Do Alongside The Darts

The World Matchplay is a matter of days away, and if you're lucky enough to have a ticket, then you've got the sights and sounds of Blackpool during the summer to enjoy too. For generations, it's been a tourist hotspot, from the Victorians to the present day. But outside of the stunning Winter Gardens, what else should you be taking in? Here's our guide to the famous Lancashire town…

Go Up The Tower

It's the first thing you see as you arrive into Blackpool, and since 1894 it's stood proudly on the seafront, looking straight across the Irish Sea. The Tower itself is a great way to spend a few hours, from checking out the views across Lancashire to enjoying the historic Tower Ballroom, most famous these days for Strictly.

Fish & Chips

Then it's straight back down the Tower for some fish and chips. There are dozens of great chip shops across the town, but we'd thoroughly recommend the Yorkshire Fisheries, just a short walk into town. Many of the great entertainers who played Blackpool's piers used to stop by to get their pre-show meal at the venue, and you won't find a better bit of fish in town.

Bingo has really grown in popularity online in recent years, with the likes of online slingo games reaching out to a new generation of players. However, it's been a staple on the Blackpool seafront for many a year, and a trip to the town isn't complete without enjoying a game.

You'll find games all day every day, so if you only have one evening in the town, and that's watching the darts, you can certainly get an afternoon session in before walking over to the Winter Gardens.

Riding the Big One

We wouldn't recommend this one straight after a portion of fish and chips, but a trip to the Blackpool Pleasure Beach is a great way to spend an afternoon. There are tons of great rollercoasters and rides, but it's the Big One that really provides the biggest thrills.

It's the tallest rollercoaster in the United Kingdom, and at this point, it was built the tallest and steepest in the world, with the first drop of 62m. Across the park, there's also the likes of the Avalanche, Revolution, Infusion and the Grand National, one of the park's most famous attractions with two carriages going head-to-head with one another to get around the track first.

PDC PDC World Matchplay Past Winners

The World Matchplay started in 1994 and is a firm favourite of the players and the dart fans. It is played over the summer period and currently staged at the Winter Gardens Blackpool. The Winter Gardens iconic surroundings along with a close crowd atmosphere make this one of the top events of the season.

This is one of the titles all dart players want to win alongside the World Championships. Played in leg format, not sets, can make for some run away winners. However, there have been many last leg deciders in this tournament.
