Handicapping the 2018 Premier League (Darts)

While it may not be formally considered one of dart’s major events, the fans and players alike look forward to the Premier League every year. This year’s league includes four participants from the 2017 league, two returning players from the 2016 event and four Premier League rookies. Here’s a quick look at the current odds (odds may vary from one betting site to another) to win the title.

Michael van Gerwen - 1.81

Rob Cross - 5.00

Gary Anderson – 7.00

Peter Wright – 10.00

Raymond van Barneveld – 34.00

Daryl Gurney – 41.00

Mensur Suljovic – 41.00

Michael Smith – 67.00

Gerwyn Price – 101.00

Simon Whitlock – 201.00

With Phil Taylor ready to enjoy his life in semi-retirement, the battle for the top position in the world of dart is reaching critical point. Michael van Gerwen was on a quite impressive role until his recent upset in the World Championships at the hands of Rob Cross in the semi-finals. Cross followed one upset with another by taking down Gary Anderson 7-2 in the World Finals.

Rob Cross 2018 World Darts ChampionNot to worry about World #1 van Gerwen though. He did return just a little over a week ago for a big Masters victory. When on top of his game, van Gerwen is nearly unbeatable. The loss to Cross was a result of the underdog playing one of the best matches of his life. That match aside, there’s nothing to suggest van Gerwen is off-form. Still, odds of 1.81 seem a bit low, considering the depth of this short field of top-ranked players. Accepting the notion we are considering wagers against the best in the world and three-time Premier League Champion, there’s two alternatives worth considering.

Rob Cross 2018 World Darts Champion

Rob Cross – Cross began his journey as a full-time professional dart player just a little over a year ago. It’s incredible to think he has already reached #3 in the world based largely on his victory in the World Championships. Still, this young man offers a lot of intrigue. He went man to man with the best player in the world and beat him in what might have been one of the greatest matches of all-time. He withstood the pressure and came out on top, not exactly an easy thing to do in your first World Championships event. At odds of 5.00, Cross offers tremendous value, too much value to be ignored.

Mensur Suljovic

Mensur Soljovic - The Gentle

Mensur Soljovic – When handicapping any event, current form has to be considered. Since the beginning of Autumn 2017, Soljovic has indeed been in very good form. His current run started with a win in the Champions League in September. He followed that up with a final four finish in the World Grand Prix in October and a final 16 appearance in the World Championships. After his runner-up finish to van Gerwen last week at he Masters, odds of 41.00 look juicy on a player who proved to be second best of this group just last week.
