PDC Premier League Return August 2020

Premier League Standings ahead of the upcoming return

The lengthy wait has continued for when we would finally see the return of the Premier League darts season. The 2020 Premier League season was ground to a halt, with six rounds of fixtures having already taken place. This week now sees its return, with Milton Keynes hosting the next six rounds of fixtures on consecutive nights. That is fantastic news for darts fans before the season will then switch back to the normal change of venue each week from September 17th.

The current darts betting markets has defending champion Michael Van Gerwen as the overwhelming favourite at odds of 11/10. This has seen him well supported with the different promotions, bonuses and welcome offers that are available and listed. That comes in what is now one of the best sports to bet on for live entertainment, as anticipation builds ahead of the Premier league’s return. Van Gerwen is currently sitting second in the table, with four wins and two loses. The most recent match seeing him beat Gerwyn Price 7-5. However, Van Gerwen is a five-time winner of the Premier League, that includes winning each of the last four years in succession. That is why he remains the overwhelming favourite to land his fifth in succession and returns against Rob Cross.

Second in the betting is Peter Wright at 5/1, who is also the current world number two. He finished runner-up in the competition back in 2017 but has since been victorious in the World Championships earlier this year. Wright also won the Masters earlier this year, so returns full of confidence and will be hopeful of going one better than in 2017. At present he is sitting in fifth in the standings, having picked up three wins, one draw and one loss from his six matches to date. Wright’s most recent match in the Premier League was a 7-4 victory over Michael Smith, and he will return by taking on Glen Durrant, who currently heads up the league standings. This is following him picking up nine points, putting him one clear of favourite Van Gerwen. Despite this positive start, Durrant is widely available at 14/1 to go on and land the title, which would be his first major PDC title since moving over.

Gerwyn Price is third in the betting at a general 7/1 for the title and also currently stands as the world number three. He will be looking for a much better finish than in 2019, which saw him finishing back in fifth. ‘The Iceman’ has been on a big upward curve in recent years, that has seen him become one of the leading names in the sport. That has included him winning the Grand slam in both 2018 and 2019 and challenge to the latter stages in virtually all major competitions. At present, he is down in seventh position in the Premier League standings, following picking up one win, three draws and two loses from his six matches played to date. This shows he will need to return at his best to push up the table and challenge for spaces on finals night. As mentioned previously, he was beaten by Van Gerwen in his most recent match in the competition and will now return by taking on Nathan Aspinall, who is also currently above him in the table.

It now sets up for a fascinating return of the Premier League, with the competition still wide open and all to play for.
